Richard Shine Dinner, long time business community and philanthropic leader in the Bay Area, died Tuesday at his home in Kenwood after a long strugg;e with heart and kidney disease.He was 76.
Mr. Dinner was a well known insurance executive. He entered the business just after Word War ll, and in 1949 became a partner in Erlanger, Reed, Dinner, & Meyer, an insurance firm which merged in 1970 with Levison Brothers to become Dinner Levison.
But he was best known for his philanthropic involvement with San Francisco's cultural community. He was a devoted supporter of the San Francisco Opera and Symphony, and last year was elected a Symphony Life Governor.
Mr. Dinner was born in Brookline, Mass. After graduating from Newton High School, he attended Boston University, where he majored in business administration.
In 1942 he married Betty Swig, daughter of the late Benjamin Swig.
From 1944 until 1946 he served in the U.S.Army, and was assigned to the China-Burma-India theater of operations with the Office of Strategic Serivces. He was awareded a Bronze Star for distinguished service behind the Japanese lines in Burma.
After the war Mr. Dinner moved to California, and began what would become a 50-year carreer in the insurance industry. .
In May 1980 Betty Swig Dinner died. IN October 1982 Mr. Dinner married Joan Whithers, an educator and fourth-generation San Francisca
In addidtion to his cultural activities Mr. Dinner was very active in civic affairs, and served on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Granduate Theologica Union in Berkeley, the San Francisco Zoological Society, California Pacific Medical Center Foundation, the United Way, the Salvation Army, Israel Bonds, Temple Emanu-El, and the Jewish Family Service Agency.
His many affiliations included the Phoenix Society and the Family Club. He was awarded an honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, by the Hebrew Union College in NewYork.. He received the prestigious William Booth Award from the Salvation Army for his outstanding contributions. And he was particularly honored by the Graduate Theological Union to have its Judiac Studies progran named in his honor.
